Q&A TIME
What is a hair transplant?
Hair transplantation is the aesthetic redistribution of donor dominant hair follicles from donor areas such as the chest or the back of the head into thinning or balding areas of the scalp. These days, thanks to current microsurgical technologies, the results are very natural in appearance.
How long does the transplanted hair last?
Hair is harvested from areas of the body which are not likely to go bald naturally. The result is therefore permanent – in fact almost all transplanted hair can last a lifetime. In some cases, a small amount of transplanted hair may be lost as the patient ages.
Is it going to hurt?
In the majority of cases patients do not report any major discomfort during the procedure. Occasionally there are reports of minor pain. However local anaesthetic is used during the procedure and you will be supplied with pain medication afterwards should you require it. It is unlikely that you will need to take any.
What about scarring?
Scarring, known medically as ‘fibrosis’ occurs as part of the skin’s healing process whenever there has been damage. With hair transplant procedures, the healing sites in the transplanted areas are usually so small that the fibrosis is virtually undetectable. Modern techniques also result in limited scarring.
Why do some hair transplants look natural?
The simple answer is, if you encounter someone who has recently had a transplant and it has an unnatural appearance, it is simply a badly done transplant. If you select one of our recommended surgeons you can be assured of a natural looking result.
Are there any complications or risks with the hair transplant surgery?
Patients who adhere to post-transplant instructions may experience infection. This is however rare in patients who are diligent in their post-op care. Should infection occur, it generally is easily treatable with antibiotics.
How many sessions are needed for a full transplant?
This is completely dependent on your individual situation and can only be answered by your surgeon.
Can women undergo hair transplantation?
Yes - in fact female hair loss is quite common. More than 20 million American women are experiencing some degrees of female pattern hair loss.
