BREAST REDUCTION
Many ladies with large breasts visit my offices complaining of medical problems caused by the excessive weight of their breasts. These can vary from chronic neck and back pains, breathing problems and severe skin irritations. Most of these patients also experience psychological problems and can even find that the size of their breasts affect many of their normal activities in life. Teenagers with large breasts feel extremely self-conscious.
A breast reduction or reduction mammaplasty is designed to vastly improve the quality of these patients' lives and I find that this procedure is one of the most gratifying cosmetic surgery procedures.
Breast reduction surgery is performed under general anaesthetic, with a projected initial recovery period of 12 days. Most patients are extremely happy with the results after years of back and neck strain from cumbersome breasts. They also reportedly find it easier to find clothing that fits once their breast size is more in proportion to their overall body shape.
The most common reduction procedure in the past involves making three incisions on each breast – one around the areola, another from the areola to the under the breast, and a third along the crease of the breast. Fat, tissue and skin is then removed and the nipple and areola are repositioned as required. Excess skin that has been stretched is also removed. The vertical mastopexy, (also known as the lollipop technique), is however my preferred technique in most breast reductions. This technique is however restricted to the moderately enlarged breasts.
Surgery is performed under general anaesthetics, with a projected initial recovery period of 12 days. Drainage tubes may be inserted temporarily. You will need to ease very slowly back into your regular routine, taking plenty of time to recuperate before putting strain or pressure onto your upper body.
The results of breast reduction are permanent.
