BREAST LIFT
As the years pass by, a woman's breasts are affected by factors such as gravity, nursing and pregnancy. During the normal aging process, the skin losses its elasticity and therefore the breast firmness and shape are lost, leading to the sagging of the breast tissue. Unless done in conjunction with a reduction or an augmentation this will not change the size of the breasts, but it can restore firmness and position.
Following breast lift surgery, most patients notice an immediate and dramatic change in the shape, contour and projection of their breasts
A variety of techniques are available and therefore Dr. Wilkinson will select the correct procedure for your breasts to achieve maximal lift and minimize any potential down side. She will always attempt to apply the "short scar" technique wherever possible, to ensure maximum breast lift with the minimum visible scarring on the breasts.
If however more upper pole fullness is desired, then Dr Wilkinson recommends that an implant be added
This is done by making two incisions: one around the areola and another along the crease of the breast. The skin is then tightened and the incisions closed with dissolving stitches.
During the post-operative phase you will need to wear a surgical bra, and there may be drainage tubes in place temporarily.
Should you wish to breast feed after surgery you need to discuss this with Dr. Wilkinson so that she can take the necessary precautions during surgery. There is however the chance that even with these precautions, it may not be possible for some women to breast feed after breast surgery.
Expect an initial recovery period of 10 days.
Dr. Wilkinson will make every effort to make your scars as inconspicuous as possible, however the scars associated with mastopexy are visible and permanent, sometimes taking months to fade. Most patients enjoy the freedom of being able to wear clothes without support garments and are satisfied with their breast lifts if they preoperatively understand the scars and limitations of the surgery, and have realistic expectations. It is important to remember that the effects of aging, pregnancy weight fluctuations and gravity will eventually cause the breasts to sag again.
