BREAST AUGMENTATION
The breasts are the most common site for cosmetic surgery around the world. For many women, the way they feel about their bodies and their femininity is directly linked to the size and shape of their breasts, and their personal body image can be dramatically altered following breast enhancement surgery – be it in the form of augmentation, lift or reduction.
Breast enlargement surgery is one of the most common procedures in my practice. I believe that tiny breasts are often a major concern for many ladies and deciding to enhance the breasts is often a life changing step for many of my patients.
The procedure is often straight forward, however it is often a daunting process for patients to obtain information on the details of the operation and techniques due to the many different approaches and placements by surgeons and the large variety of available implants.
There are a number of options to choose from when it comes to implants. These range from silicone to saline and from rough to smooth textures. Depending on your body type Dr. Wilkinson will be able to give advice. Any family history of breast cancer should also be kept in mind.
Thin, small-breasted women are usually advised to have the implant inserted under the muscle to cover the implant. Incisions are made in the armpit, at the lower border of the areola, or in the crease beneath the breast. A pocket is created to cater for the implant.
In patients with adequate breast tissue and who have minimal ptosis of the breasts, I would suggest that the implant be placed in front of the muscle.
It is usually not necessary that the nipple be transposed higher on the breast, however if this is required a breast lift can be performed with the augmentation. (see breast lift). The surgery takes between an hour-and-a-half to two hours, and is performed mostly under conscious sedation.
Be prepared for between two and three days of acute pain following augmentation. Bandages are removed after five days, although you should be up and about within a day or two. For two weeks following surgery you may not drive or lift your arms above waist height.
Implants look good for up to 15 years, but as the body ages the results are less pleasing.
