TUMMY TUCK
The tummy tuck also known as Abdominoplasty is in my practice an extremely popular procedure used to tighten overly stretched abdominal muscles and skin in an effort to achieve a smoother, flatter appearance of the tummy area. The procedure can dramatically reduce the appearance of a protruding abdomen, but is however associated with a long scar which can extend from hip to hip.
The best candidates for tummy tucks are individuals who are in relatively good shape but are bothered by a fat deposit or loose abdominal skin that won't respond to diet or exercise. The surgery is particularly helpful to women who have stretched their abdominal muscles and skin through pregnancy to beyond the point where they can not return to normal without surgical assistance. It is also useful in older patients where loss of skin elasticity combined with excess weight can be improved.
There are different forms of tummy tucks depending on the individual cause of the problems which the patients want to address. In some cases tummy tucks are performed in conjunction with liposuction if there are fatty deposits to be removed.
A full tummy tuck involves major surgery and you will be required to spend 1-2 nights at a post-operative care facility after surgery.
Dr. Wilkinson will make a horizontal incision along the pubic region, varying in size according to the amount of loose skin to be removed. A second incision near the navel area may also be required. The excess skin is trimmed, and in most instances the muscles of the abdomen will also need to be tightened during the procedure.
The umbilicus will need to be repositioned.
While the initial recovery period is around 2 weeks, be prepared for the possibility that it may take several months before the swelling and bruising completely heals.
You should be able to resume normal daily activity, excluding strenuous exercise, within 3 weeks.
