Dermal Filler

Wrinkles are part of the ageing process, we are however fortunate that scientists have developed a whole range of products to help fight the signs of a maturing face. For a more youthful looking face without going under the knife, dermal fillers are available to create a bespoke treatment plan for every patient.

As you age, your body produces less collagen. This is a naturally occurring substance that acts as a framework for your skin. As a result, the skin of your face gets thinner begins to sag. Simultaneously, the face loses volume due to the decrease in facial fat and resorption of underlying bone.

A new trend in my practice is that younger patients are aware of the signs of facial aging and are requesting facelifts. Between the ages of 40 and 45, patients are wanting to look naturally  younger and prevent major surgery. This is why Liquid facelifts have become very popular for rejuvenating faces. Facial soft tissues are lost through ageing and need to be replaced through 3D volumetric treatments.

A conventional facelift removes flaccid skin to achieve a tightening around the lower face. However, rejuvenating the skin and restructuring the soft tissues without pulling the facial tissues achieves a more natural youthful appearance.

In some older patients, where volumizing techniques are not sufficient sub-dermal threads can be placed to lift the tissues in conjunction with the other 3D treatments to achieve a 4D lift.

Dermal fillers have been used for many years. They are substances that can be injected into the deeper layers of the skin to replace lost collagen and plump the underlying tissues. Many of these fillers have however caused adverse reactions and therefore scientists have searched for a filler that would be effective yet not react with the body. Hyaluronic acid is a sugar found in human tissues. Some of your body’s hyaluronic acid is used as shock absorber and lubricant for your joints, however most is found in your skin, where it offers support to the connective tissues.

Injected hyaluronic acid is therefore a natural substance found in the skin, and besides adding volume, it also delivers nutrients to the skin to retain moisture, resulting in softer, plumper skin. Hyaluronic acid is therefore the filler of choice for many doctors worldwide, since it is unlikely that anyone will have an allergic reaction, it is stable and injects smoothly. There are many brands of hyaluronic acid-based filler, each with a different molecular size.

The Juvederm collection is one of the leading Hyaluronic acid fillers In the US and Europe. The fillers in the range can be used very specifically to treat different areas in the face. In some areas like the cheeks you may require a product with more volume and lifting capacity. Whereas, in the lip area I choose a product that is softer to naturally define the shape of your lips. All Juvederm products are approved by the FDA.
Juvederm’s new revolutionary Vycross technology has been formulated to improve your experience during your dermal filler treatment. Vycross blends different weights of hyaluronic acid (HA) ie low (90%) and high (10%), allowing a lower concentration of HA  to be used than in the past, which results in less swelling, more lifting capacity and predictable results.

Due to the smooth quality of the product, it literally flows through the needle, enabling me to inject with ease and minimize the pain  and bruising associated with filers in the past. The additional local anaesthetic in the product further decreases any discomfort after the procedure.

The added benefit of the smooth injection is a more natural “feel”. No more palpable lumps, which results in a natural soft contour.

  1. Voluma: This is a “lifting” product, designed to be placed deep on the cheek bones to improve sagging midface tissues and restore a youthful facial contour. Besides cheek augmentation, non surgical nasal and chin augmentation can improve the shape of the face and enhance your natural  beauty. Some patients may also look tired due to hollow temples. By adding volume to your temples you will immediately look more rejuvenated.  In men structure can be added to strengthen the jawline and chin resulting in a more masculine profile.
  2. Volift: As a softer product, Volift is perfect to gently contour smaller superficial depressions and lines in the face while restoring a natural-looking lip shape by carefully defining the contours of the lip. Gone are the days of the obvious “hollywood housewives” lips. Volift carefully contours the orbital rims supporting the brows and gently lifting the brows higher.
  3. Volbella: The softest of the 3 fillers in the collection. This product can be used very superficially to plump the skin. Fine lines such as smoker’s lines around the lips are reduced with regular Volbella injections. Hollow lower eyelids can be also reduced by filling the hollows to reduce visible dark circles under the eyes.
If you don’t want full-scale plastic surgery, but  you want  to look naturally refreshed and rejuvenated then dermal fillers will give you  instant results lifting and contouring your face.

Dermal fillers can be used for:

  • Facial Augmentation: Cheeks, nose, lips, chin, and jawline.

The Procedure

When you meet me, I examine the quality of the skin you want to treat. It’s important that you’re honest with me about your medical history, medication and expectations during this time. So that, if they’re not inline with the treatment, then another can be recommended instead.

Then, once you feel at ease and are certain that you want to go through with the treatment, a date can be booked.

The procedure for Juvederm fillers is performed after a topical anaesthetic is applied to the targeted area. Then, I inject the substance into the area you wish to target. This routine can take up to one hour to complete.
After your treatment, you can expect any bruising and swelling to subside within 10- 14 days. As your skin will be sensitive, it’s important to keep it out of direct sunlight. Recovery time after Juvederm is quick, so you should be able to get back to work straight after your treatment.
