Home - Plastic Surgery Myths
Some people fear plastic surgery due to certain myths that they have heard from people or read on the internet. Dr. Wilkinson took some time out of her busy schedule to crush these myths once and for all!
1.
One of the most important myths circulating is that only plastic surgeons can legally perform plastic or cosmetic surgery. This is untrue as any medical practitioner can perform plastic surgery procedures- of course, this is not recommended. It is best to choose someone skilled in the procedure you want performed.
Dr. Wilkinson is a member of the Association of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons of South Africa (APRSSA): "Our Association represents over 98% of registered plastic surgeons in South Africa, all of whom are highly skilled and qualified to ensure that you receive the best possible care".
2. Numerous people that consider surgical procedures think that cosmetic surgery and re-constructive surgery is the same thing. This is false.
Re-constructive surgery addresses physical deformities caused by congenital defects, developmental abnormalities, trauma, infection, disease or tumors. Cosmetic surgery is for the 'enhancement of appearance' and is usually not obligatory.
3. 'Preparing' oneself for the price of plastic surgery by doing research on the Internet often leaves people in shock after a visit to the plastic surgeon.
No plastic surgery procedure costs the same as the price is dependable on many variables. Anesthesia, surgical facility fees, the over-night stay- all of these add to the price of surgery. It is best to see your surgeon and after consultation find out exactly how much your surgery will cost. Remember each person differs and so will the cost of your individual surgery.
If the amount is 'shocking' be sure to navigate to our finance section- who knows, your dreams might still come true!
4.
You are allowed to ask your surgeon ANYTHING about your procedure. There's no need to feel insecure, Dr. Wilkinson expects you to ask! That's the only way you will be able to make an informed decision regarding whether or not you are ready to follow through with the procedure.
