Eyelid surgery, also known as an eyelid tuck or blepharoplasty, is a simple procedure
that I commonly recommend to my patients. Relaxed eyes are essential
for a beautiful youthful look. Many of my patients complain about
looking tired and angry and are astounded at how an eyelid operation
can revive their look and reveal their bright sparkling eyes again.
As we age, the very delicate skin and supporting structures around
the eyelids easily stretch. The upper lids sag, creating a hooded
look. In the lower lids this sagging is present as "bags"
and creates a tired appearance. In severe cases this extra skin
can even impair your vision.
Cosmetic eyelid surgery is performed as a day procedure under local
anaesthetic, with sedation if required, and usually takes an hour
or two. The surgery involves the removal of fatty deposits (like
bags) and the tightening of excess skin around the eyes. Upper or
lower lids can be done separately or together.
Eyelid plastic surgery will not improve a sagging
brow. For this reason I occasionally combine a brow suspension with
blepharoplasty, if required.
Recovery is relatively quick and the sutures are all removed by
day seven. Most of the swelling and bruising subsides over two or
The scars may remain pink for six months but will eventually fade,
leaving you with a more alert and youthful look that will last for
years. For many people, the results of eyelid surgery are permanent.
