Botox
Botox is a substance derived from the protein Botulinum toxin, which is produced by a bacterium called Clostridium botulinum. It is used to paralyse the facial muscles which cause wrinkles. This treatment is most successful when used on frown lines on the forehead and on ‘crow’s feet’ or laughter lines around the eyes.
Botox injections work by blocking the nerve impulses responsible for wrinkle-causing muscle movement. Once the treatment has taken full effect it gives your skin a smooth look and feel. Additionally, Botox weakens certain muscles which results in the patient using them less and this helps to decrease the progression of further wrinkles appearing. The effects last for up to six months.
The treated area will appear smoother while the untreated muscles will maintain their full functionality, allowing patients to exercise their usual full range of facial expressions. Botox has its limitations and it is important to understand the difference between Botox and fillers.
As discussed, Botox is mostly used for frown lines, laughter lines, and on the forehead. Fillers are best utilised to fill in creases not associated with muscle movement. It has a number of other uses including the enhancement of cheekbones and lips, as well as other non-surgical applications.
